Eurostar started its high-speed service on November 14, 1994. The early test train (Eurostar) was made to travel to United Kingdom on June 20, 1993. In the initial period, after it started its operations, its services were carried on between Waterloo International station (London), Gare du Nord (Paris) and Brussels-South railway station. From a second railway station of UK, Eurostar then started its further services on January 8, 1996 and it didn't look back thereafter. Eurostar International Limited (since 2010) owns Eurostar. Its mainline routes include High Speed 1, LGV Nord, Channel Tunnel, and HSL 1.
Previously called
Channel Tunnel Rail Link, High Speed 1 operates from London (via Kent) to the Channel Tunnel (its British end). On September 2003 its first section opened and its commercial services started in 2007.
On the other hand, the 207 miles high speed French LGV Nord rail connects Belgian border and Paris. It came into existence in 1993 and also connects Channel Tunnel and Paris. Hence it normally happens to be a part of all Eurostar journeys.
Channel Tunnel started with its tunneling in 1988 and happens to be the only one which connects the European mainland and Great Britain. In Calais on May 6, 1994., French President François Mitterrand and British Queen Elizabeth II formally opened this 31.4 miles Channel Tunnel. Eurotunnel owns it and charges Eurostar a good amount (toll) for the usage. The HSL 1 (55 miles high-speed line), started its journey on December 14, 1997 and it operates between London and Brussels.
The fleet of Eurostar comprises of electric multiple-unit trains total 38 in number (in the UK, Class 373 and in France, TGV373000).Thirty one among them (Three Capitals) has 2 power cars and 18 carriages for passengers and are 394 meters long. The rest seven (North of London) consists of 14 passenger carriages with a length of 320 meters. The trains are capable of running 186 miles per hour (with high-speed lines). In the Channel Tunnel their speed is around 99 miles per hour. Among the 31 (Three Capitals), 27 of these tailored TGV sets are enough to carry on the operations. SNCF uses the rest four for domestic TGV services. At Temple Mills depot one Class 08 diesel shunter is also run by Eurostar. These sets doesn't have the Eurostar logos anymore, however, black, yellow and white, being the base colors are not removed.
The 'Three Capitals' sets went through renovation between 2004 and 2005 and its interior was redesigned. Business Premier became the new name of Premium First class. The total renovated train is yet to come in 2012.
